Ingredients
Method
- Start by bringing the 500 ml of water to a rolling boil in a medium-sized pot. Sprinkle in a pinch of salt to enhance the flavor.
- In a separate mixing bowl, combine the mabele with the cold water. Stir thoroughly to form a smooth slurry. Slowly pour this mabele mixture into the pot of boiling water, stirring continuously to avoid any lumps from forming.
- Allow the mixture to return to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the pot and let it simmer gently for 25 to 30 minutes. Stir the porridge every 5 minutes to ensure it thickens evenly and doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pot. Cook until the mabele is fully tender or has reached your preferred consistency.
Variation
- For a microwave method, mix 250 ml (1 cup) Tops Coarse Mabele with 250 ml (1 cup) cold water in a large, microwave-safe bowl. Add a small amount of salt to taste. Gradually pour in 500 ml (2 cups) boiling water while stirring continuously to form a smooth mixture.
- Microwave on High (100% power). For a thinner, porridge-like texture suitable for breakfast, cook for approximately 5 to 7 minutes. For a thicker, firmer consistency ideal for dinner, cook for about 8 to 9 minutes. Stir the mixture thoroughly after the first 1½ minutes to minimize lumps, then stir two to three more times during the remaining cooking time.
Serving Suggestion
- For a hearty breakfast, serve warm with a splash of milk or a knob of butter, sweetened to taste with sugar. For a savory dinner option, pair with a rich beef stew for a satisfying and traditional meal.
