Ingredients

  • 250 ml 1 cup Tops Coarse Mabele
  • 250 ml 1 cup cold water
  • 500 ml 2 cups hot water, for boiling
  • Salt to taste

Method

  1. Start by bringing the 500 ml of water to a rolling boil in a medium-sized pot. Sprinkle in a pinch of salt to enhance the flavor.
  2. In a separate mixing bowl, combine the mabele with the cold water. Stir thoroughly to form a smooth slurry. Slowly pour this mabele mixture into the pot of boiling water, stirring continuously to avoid any lumps from forming.
  3. Allow the mixture to return to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the pot and let it simmer gently for 25 to 30 minutes. Stir the porridge every 5 minutes to ensure it thickens evenly and doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pot. Cook until the mabele is fully tender or has reached your preferred consistency.
Variation
  1. For a microwave method, mix 250 ml (1 cup) Tops Coarse Mabele with 250 ml (1 cup) cold water in a large, microwave-safe bowl. Add a small amount of salt to taste. Gradually pour in 500 ml (2 cups) boiling water while stirring continuously to form a smooth mixture.
  2. Microwave on High (100% power). For a thinner, porridge-like texture suitable for breakfast, cook for approximately 5 to 7 minutes. For a thicker, firmer consistency ideal for dinner, cook for about 8 to 9 minutes. Stir the mixture thoroughly after the first 1½ minutes to minimize lumps, then stir two to three more times during the remaining cooking time.
Serving Suggestion
  1. For a hearty breakfast, serve warm with a splash of milk or a knob of butter, sweetened to taste with sugar. For a savory dinner option, pair with a rich beef stew for a satisfying and traditional meal.
