Ingredients
Method
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, salt, and a pinch of cardamom until well combined. Next, using a pastry cutter or your fingertips, blend in the butter until the mixture forms a crumbly texture, similar to pea-sized clumps. Once you’ve reached the right consistency, fold in the rolled oats with a wooden spoon, ensuring everything is evenly mixed. The topping is now ready to be sprinkled over your apple filling, bringing a perfect crunch to your apple crisp.
Notes
This recipe provides enough topping for a 9-inch square pan of fruit. If you're using a larger pan, simply double the ingredients.
Gently sprinkle small handfuls of the topping over the fruit. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 30 to 40 minutes, until the topping turns golden and crispy. If you prefer a less browned topping, consider pre-cooking firmer fruits like apples beforehand.
Feel free to use any fruit you enjoy! Rhubarb is a personal favorite, but apples, pears, and peaches also make delicious options.
